Goals #3:

  • The primary central focus is to introduce students to musical elements: melody (diatonic scales) and rhythm. (Pr: 4.1 & 4.2)
    • Students will be able to demonstrate and explain how the selection of music to perform is influenced by personal interest, knowledge, and context, as well as their personal and others’ technical skill.     • Students will be able to notate C major scale on the staff. (Do Re Mi, We Shall Over Come) and identify ABCD form. (Sym of Hawaiian Bird, #4. Vanished Voices: A Farewell to the ‘Ō‘ō) (Pr4.2)
    • Students will be able to identify dotted quarter, whole note, and simple quadruple meter. (Do Re Mi, We Shall Over Come) (Pr4.2)
  • The secondary focus is to guide students to explore how dynamics and tonalities influence the audience's perception when listening to a piece of music. And how composers composed pieces affected by the social, cultural events that happened at that time (We Shall Over Come, Sym of Hawaiian Bird, #4. Vanished Voices: A Farewell to the ‘Ō‘ō). 
    • Students are able to identity and respond to the context of music from a variety of genres, cultures, and historical periods. (Re: 7.2)
    • While listening, students are able to respond to how composers’ and performers’ application of elements of music and expressive qualities (form, dynamics, tonalities) presented in the music. (Re: 8.1)

Style

The history of We Shall Overcome (you may use other good resources)



  • Introduce the history of the We Shall Overcome to the students (melody and lyrics). How did it evolve?
  • Relate to the Civil Rights movement. For those who did the Long Journey to Freedom, this song is a good extension of that project. (password: freedom)
  • Relate to COVID-19, do you think we will overcome the crisis? How do the students feel singing this song? (STANDARDS: RESPONDING)
